Captain Hansja Sharma of the Indian Army has made history by becoming the first woman pilot qualified to operate the Rudra armed helicopter, a frontline combat aviation platform used for reconnaissance and close air support missions.

The achievement marks a significant milestone in the Indian Army’s aviation wing, reflecting the expanding operational roles being undertaken by women officers in combat and combat-support positions.

The Rudra helicopter is the weaponized variant of India’s Advanced Light Helicopter and is equipped with electro-optical sensors, a 20-mm turret gun, rockets, and air-to-ground missiles. It is designed to conduct armed reconnaissance, close air support, and anti-tank operations in both plains and high-altitude environments.

Army officials said Captain Sharma successfully completed rigorous operational training, including weapons employment, tactical flying, and mission coordination, qualifying her to serve in active squadrons tasked with frontline operations.

Defense analysts say the development underscores a broader shift in the armed forces toward greater integration of women in combat aviation roles, while also highlighting India’s growing reliance on indigenous defense platforms.
